UPROOTED

Leaving home at C.J. Peete housing complex

Like any home, public housing developments are genial places much of the time - warm and energetic, neighborly and full of life. People lean on one another, share each other's troubles and celebrate each other's triumphs. They have a sense of community. But these days, at public housing developments all over New Orleans, there are families being rearranged, tenants being uprooted. It is part of a national trend to upgrade public housing. Despite the negative image of C.J. Peete, for the long-time residents it's home. And all the kind concern and all the relocation programs in the world won't replace the feeling of home.
